A total of 34 individuals suspected of gang-related activities have been apprehended in a strategic operation conducted by security forces in Lira City.

The police from the West Division of Lira City successfully arrested these suspects during a coordinated operation carried out on December 10, 2024.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the regional police spokesperson for the North Kyoga region, the operation targeted specific areas within the West Division, including Kamshwali, Te-Atat, Te-dam, and Te-kulu.

The police report indicates that these locations were identified as hotspots for criminal activities during a Police Community Policing program held in various parts of Lira City West Division. Allegations against the gangs include the use of opium, inhalation of aviation fuel, excessive alcohol consumption, and theft of personal belongings such as mobile phones, wallets, handbags, and other items, as well as incidents of burglary.

Of the 34 suspects apprehended, 9 are female and 25 are male. They are currently in custody at the Lira City West Division police station, where statements are being recorded, and case files are being prepared for submission to the Regional Criminal and Serious Crimes Authority (RCSA) for review and legal guidance on the various charges.

Okema expressed gratitude for the effective collaboration between the police and community members, emphasizing the importance of information sharing in enhancing security. This partnership reflects the community’s understanding of their role in combating crime, as outlined in Article 17 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which details the responsibilities of Ugandan citizens.

Furthermore, the security forces are committed to ensuring a peaceful environment during the upcoming Christmas season. Community members are encouraged to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by sharing timely information to facilitate prompt responses to criminal activities.
