PARAMOUNT CHIEF URGES THE PEOPLE OF LANGO TO USE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD TO DISCARD NEGATIVE BELIEFS AND PRACTICES AGAINST GIRLS.
The Lango Paramount Chief (Won Nyaci) Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune has asked clan chiefs (owitong) to step up sensitization campaigns to ensure that all forms of practices and beliefs that undermine the potential of girl children are discarded.
He cites poor education as an impediment against the growth and development of the girls in Lango to their full potential because some people still believe that girls should be confined to the kitchen in marriage to produce for the man’s clans.
Admitting though that marriage is an institution ordained by God for the sustenance and continuity of humanity, Okune says it’s regrettable that some families have turned the marriage institution into a maximum security prison.
Okune applauded the parents and guardians, some as single parents who have made sacrifices to support the education of their daughters who are now serving the community in different capacities.
“…when you go to any health facility, private company, office and business you simply get services from the ladies without asking their background, so we should be proud of such parents who spent money to educate the girls…’,the paramount chief said.
In spite of the strides made in empowering the girl children, Okune observes that many young women are suffering in the hands of some irresponsible men who use the bride wealth as an excuse to torture the wives.
